Spring 2005 MAPLE Results
- LOST 3 - 1 versus Freedom FC (April 10th)
Freedom FC used their size and direct style of play to capitalize on early Western mistakes to seize a 2 - 0 halftime advantage. The boys scored a second half goal to narrow the margin, but could not get the equalizer. Freedom scored a third goal off a counterattack as time expired. The third goal came with everyone pushed forward trying to equalize. The boys are off for the next two weeks.
WON 2 - 1 versus FC Roma (April 24th) Despite a two-week layoff and a very uneven pitch, the U14 boys defeated FC Roma 2 - 1 in Chelmsford. The boys used hard work and determination to gain the victory. Both goals came as a result of hustling plays by two different Western players. The boys showed improvement over their first game.
WON 1 - 0 versus FC United (May 1st) Western defeated FC United in a West Boylston quagmire today 1 - 0. With standing water and muck the norm, the boys scored a second-half goal and weathered an FC United storm to hang onto the victory. The boys fact the Dragons next week.
TIED 1 - 1 versus Dragons FC (May 8th) The U14 Boys tied the Dragons 1-1 on a windy Holyoke HS field. The boys spotted the Dragons a 1-0 lead on one of their few wind-aided opportunities. With the start of the second half and the wind at our backs, the Western boys came out and kept the ball in the Dragons' end. With less than a minute left, the boys' persistence paid off, as Western equalized off a corner. the boys play FC Puma next weekend.
LOST 1 - 0 versus FC Puma (May 15th) The U14 boys lost to FC Puma 1-0 in Northboro. The FC Puma side was better prepared, hustled and consistently beat the Western side to the ball throughout the game. Puma scored a first half goal off of a defensive breakdown and used their intensity to make the score stand up. The boys next play Thursday night against Inter at 7:30 at Holyoke HS.
WON 1 - 0 versus InterBandits (May 19th - makeup of postponed April 17th game) The Western boys defeated Inter 1-0 under the lights at Holyoke HS. The boys scored a first half tally to go into the half up 1-0. The goal came off a beautiful half-volley after an excellent change in play. The boys weathered a couple of anxious second half moments and were able to win the ball consistently in the second half, as Inter was playing its third game in five days.
LOST 3 - 0 versus Greater Boston (May 22nd) The u 14 boys were defeated by Gt. Boston 3-0 in Lowell today. The boys played a strong first half as they entered halftime with the score 0-0. Western had several good attacking opportunities and possessed the ball well. At the start of the second half, the Bolts erupted for three strikes. The boys fought gamely to the end but were not able to close the gap. The boys go to Oakwood for Memorial Day and await the State Cup.
Nov. 25: Bethesday Tournament Results
The u14 boys capped a wonderful fall season that saw them finish 1st in
MAPLE Division 1, be a finalist in the Farmngton tournament, with a great
run to the finals of the Bethesda Tournament. The boys began the
tournament playing two teams from Pennsylvannia. On Saturday, the boys won
the first game 1-0 and played some of their most attractive soccer of the
year. The boys jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second match and then made
adjustments as our opponents went to a 2-4-4 lineup. In both games teams
were using a variety of zonal combinations to unbalance our side. The boys
did a very nice job of adjusting to the variety of tactics. On Sunday the
boys faced a very good Williamsburg, VA side with both teams having a
chance of going forward with a victory. Western jumped out to a 1-0
halftime lead on a brilliant bending pass to an overlapping midfielder who
finished the play. Williamsburg changed up tactically and had some very
good chances to equalize however, the boys were able to keep them off the
board and move on to the final against a NJ team. The boys came slowly out
of the gate in the finals and surrendered an early goal to trail 1-0 at the
half. With the second half came new life as the boys really took the play
to the NJ eleven. Against the run of play NJ scored on a counterattack to
go up 2-0. The boys did not give up and pulled a goal back and created
several outstanding chances to equalize right up to the final whistle. the
boys will begin indoor training on December 13th.
Fall 2004 MAPLE Results
- Won 5 - 0 versus SUNS (Sept. 12th)
The U14 Boys opened the season with a 5 - 0 victory over an undermanned SUNS team. The boys jumped out to a 3 - 0 halftime lead and followed that with two second-half scores. The boys moved the ball well and worked at trying to possess the ball. The SUNS played hard throughout the match.
Won 3 - 0 versus FC Puma (Sept. 19th) The U14 Boys Red Team defeated FC Puma 3 - 0 at a blustery Blunt Park. The boys came out of halftime deadlocked 0 - 0 with the physical Puma team, but with the wind to their backs, they scored three goals in a fifteen minute span to go onto victory. The boys worked very hard today and used a total team effort for the victory.
Won 2 - 0 versus Inter SC (Sept. 26th)
Won 2 - 0 versus Greater Boston (Oct. 3rd) The Western United U14 boys defeated the Greater Boston Bolts 2-0 in Framingham. The boys withstood an excellent start by Greater Boston as the Bolts had several excellent chances in the first 15 minutes. The boys weathered the storm and scored 20 minutes in to shift the momentum. The boys added a second half tally on an excellent goal by Griffin Wagner to extend the lead. The boys worked very hard in the second half and and continue to improve.
Won 2 - 1 versus Freedom FC (Oct. 17th) The U14 Boys began very sluggishly against a very quick and determined Freedom FC side. Freedom used their speed and strength to consistently win balls and create dangerous chances. The boys responded to the challenge and came out of the first half tied 1 - 1. The second half was an intense battle with both teams going aggressively to the ball. Western scored the go-ahead goal with 15 minutes remaining to win the match 2 - 1.
Won 3 - 1 versus FC Roma (Oct. 24th) The U14 Boys played a 4 pm rainy cold match north of Boston against FC Roma. The boys won 3 - 1 with three different players scoring. The boys started brilliantly, scoring an early goal and having a second called back. The boys let down a bit after the second goal was called back and Roma scored a nice goal to know the score at the half. The boys weathered Roma's direct style of play througout the match with several defenders making key plays in the box to keep Roma off the board. The boys responded with two excellent second-half goals to secure the match. The first came after a well-earned penalty was awarded and the second off a brilliant pass out of the midfield. The match ended 3 - 1 for Western behind a truly strong team effort.
Won 1 - 0 versus South Shore (Oct. 31st) The U14 Boys struggled today in a 1 - 0 victory against a determined South Shore team at Stonehill College. After a difficult practice week, the boys did not play very well against a team trying to avoid relegation. The first half ended 0 - 0 with South Shore consistently beating Western to the ball. The boys regrouped at halftime and were able to score a well-earned goal with 15 minutes left to play. The boys made the goal hold up for the last 15 minutes. The boys face Nashua Columbus Day Tournament champions and state finalists Dragons next week in Attleboro.
Lost 3 - 1 versus FC Dragons (Nov. 7th) In a season where most things have gone well, today was a day where everything that could go wrong did. The U14 Boys were defeated 3 - 1 by Dragons in a 3:30 pm game in Attleboro. The boys conceded a corner kick goal 12 minutes into the match to go down 1 - 0 at the half. After applying intense pressure to start the second half, Western surrendered a goal from 35 yards out 8 minutes in. This goal lit a spark and the boys pulled one goal back, scoring off a free kick. With the boys applying pressure, Dragons countered and Western gave up an own goal for the final margin. The boys gained some valuable experience in playing an aggressive, street smart team.
Won 2 - 0 versus Boston Blast (Nov. 14th) The U14 Boys finished the fall 2004 season in first place in Division 1 with an 8 - 1 record, thanks to a 2 - 0 victory over the Boston Blast. The boys scored an early goal to go up 1 - 0 at the half and added a second goal late in the game to secure the win. The Blast demonstrated an excellent style of soccer that made for an enjoyable and well-played game. The boys did a much better job of trying to play possession soccer and look eagerly to competing in the Bethesda Tournament in Maryland this coming weekend.
Farmington Tournament Results (Sept. 2004)
The U14 Boys began the fall season at the Farmington Shootout competing in the Super Division. The boys opened the tournament with a well-played 0 - 0 draw with Connecticut State Champtions West Hartford Premier. The boys second game was against a young SSC club from New Jersey, where the boys gained a 2 - 0 victory. On the second day of the tournament, the boys faced Oakwood. The boys spotted Oakwood an early goal, but came back to tie the match 1 - 1. This was one of the boys' best efforts ever. The boys then needed a tie or a win against Massachusetts State Champions, the Greater Boston Bolts, to advance to Monday's championship game. The boys responded with a very good 2 - 0 victory while playing some very attractive soccer. In the title game, the boys again faced Oakwood and again surrendered an early goal. The boys were not able to overcome this lone tally and fell 1 - 0. Despite the disappointment, the boys played four quality opponents over the weekend and gained valuable experience for the upcoming season.

- Won 3 - 0 versus South Shore Select (April 18th)

- Tied 1 - 1 versus Redland Jaguars (PA)
- Tied 1 - 1 versus Blackwatch Dundee (NY)
- Won 1 - 0 versus Mt. Laurel Scorpions (NJ) but did not win group because of tiebreakers.
Fall 2003 MAPLE Results
- Won 3 - 0 versus South Shore Blazars (Sept. 7).
The Western boys played hard on a hot afternoon, limiting the Blazars offensive chances. Offensively, the team moved the ball well, scoring two first-half goals. The first resulted from good combination play and hustle and the second resulted from a courageous finish to a corner kick. The boys' next opponent are the undefeated 2002-2003 Dragons.
Won 2 - 0 versus Dragons FC (Sept. 14). The U13 Boys defeated the Dragons FC side at Wheeler Field in Southeastern Massachusetts. The boys played hard throughout the match and several of the boys really stepped up to help overcome the 2-hour drive, 4 pm start, muggy hot weather and Sunday ODP tryouts. The score was 1 - 0 Western at the half, as Western dictated play. The boys scored a spectacular goal early in the second half to secure the win. The boys are home next week.
Won 3 - 1 versus SAC (Sept. 21). The Western boys defeated SAC of Worcester 3 - 1 at the Oxbow. The boys jumped out to a 2 - 0 lead, only to let SAC back in with a goal near halftime. The boys responded with an early second-half goal to regain control of the game. Western received some excellent performances from players coming off the bench that helped to key the victory. The team did a very good job defensively against two very aggressive and talented SAC forwards. The boys did not let the forwards' rough play affect their intensity, nor their composure. The boys also did a much better job with services in the offensive third. The boys play Inter next week at Fort Devens.
Tied 0 - 0 versus InterBandits (Sept. 28) After a strong first half, the Western boys struggled at times during the second half. Although there were several excellent individual efforts, the boys are capable of a better team performance. The boys will face undefeated Greater Boston next week, followed the following week by the undefeated Sutton Fuller Hamlets.
Lost 3 - 1 versus Greater Boston (Oct. 5) The U13 boys were defeated by Greater Boston 3 - 1 at the Oxbow. The boys spotted the undefeated Boston-area team a 1 - 0 lead before coming back to tie the score. In the second half, Greater Boston, which was better prepared today, took advantage of several Western errors to increase the score to 3 - 1. The boys next play the undefeated Fuller Hamlets away.
Lost 2 - 1 versus Fuller Hamlets (Oct. 19) Despite a valient second-half effort, the U13 boys could not overcome a 2-goal first-half deficit and fell to the Fuller Hamlets 2 - 1 away. The boys dug themselves a difficult first-half hole, falling behind 2 - 0 on this rainy, cold afternoon. The intense second-half comeback fell short. The boys play South Shore Selects next week.
Lost 3 - 1 versus South Shore Selects (Oct. 26) South Shore Selects scored three goals off restarts to defeat Western 3 - 1 at Abington. The boys found themselves down 1 - 0 after giving up a free kick goal from 25-yards out. The goal was an excellent shot by the SSS player. The Western boys climbed back into the game knotting the score at 1 - 1 only to give the goal right back on a SS Select corner kick to finish the half down 2 - 1. The boys started the second half strong, just missing on a couple of chances to equalize. They then surrendered a third restart goal about 20 minutes into the second half from 18 yards out. Despite the loss, several of the boys continued their strong play. Next opponent: Chelsea.
Tied 0 - 0 versus Chelsea (Nov. 2) The Under-13 boys played their best match of the season in a 0 - 0 tie at Blunt Park against State Champion Chelsea. The boys were first to the ball, moved the ball smartly and defended as a team. The boys' work rate was the best it has been all season. All the boys contributed to this terrific effort. The boys play the Boston Blast next Sunday at Blunt Park.
Won 4 - 1 versus Boston Blast (Nov. 9)
Results of Farmington Invitational Tournament (Labor Day 2003)
The Under-13 boys were entered in the Farmington Shootout Super Six Tournament over Labor Day weekend. This elite group featured two U12 state champions (NH and CT) and two U12 state finalists (NJ and MA) as well as two other elite teams from NJ and CT. Under the leadership of guest coach Paul Sullivan, the Western boys defeated SSC Stronghold NJ Rangers 2 - 0 in a Saturday 6 pm match. Early on Sunday morning the boys played the NJ finalists Stronghold SSC Replex in an 8 am match. The game was 0 - 0 at the half. The NJ side jumped ahead 1 - 0 after scoring a well-earned goal halfway through the second half. Western responded by working hard and gained the equalizer 6 minutes later. The game featured some excellent effort by Western but also demonstrated the areas the team will be working on. Tired legs and bodies met on the field for a 3:30 match with Oakwood. The game ended 0 - 0 denying Western the chance to advance, despite a 1 - 0 - 2 record and a 3 - 1 goal differential. Oakwood moved the ball smartly during the match and played very well, coming close to taking the lead on several occasions. Several terrific goalie saves helped to keep Oakwood off the board. The boys gained some valuable experience this weekend and were able to see first-hand not only some excellent opponents but also withness the types of things they will need to work on in order to improve. Western also welcomed three new players who made their Western debut: Jeremy Nasman, Connor DeVivo and Kenny Howard. WELCOME BOYS!
