Under-14 Boys Team Results (2006-2007)
Spring 2007 Region I Results
- WON 2 - 0 versus Blackwatch (RI) (April 1st): The boys opened up their sub-regional schedule with an impressive win. In dominating fashion the good guys were able to get off on the right foot with a great win. The Western side was able to control much of the game and were able to get on the scoreboard in the first half when Delano Brown was able to intercept a pass in the opponents defensive third and catch the keeper off his line and deliver a well placed lob over the keeper’s head to take a 1-0 lead into the break. Once again controlling much of the action the boys were able to put the game away when a nice pass up the right flank from Alex Goncalves to Patrick Cronin was able to find the mark and Patrick powered the ball past a helpless keeper. The game was controlled from start to finish by the guys in red and were able to win in impressive fashion 2-0.
- WON 1 - 0 versus Massapequa (NY) (April 1st): In a game where momentum swung like a pendulum the good guys in red were able to win a close hard fought game. The Western side was able to secure momentum early when right off the kick-off the keeper for Massapequa had to make a great save to keep the good guys off the scoreboard. The momentum would slowly shift to the visitors from Long Island as the half would end in a 0-0 deadlock. The first ten minutes of the second half saw the visitors maintain the momentum and were nearly able to break through with a goal but were denied by the post. Instead of hanging their heads after the near miss this seemed to get the boys going as they began to pressure the ball all over the field and seize back the momentum. This lead to the only tally of the game when at the 18 minute mark of the second half Jesse Geary was able to hit a streaking Alex Goncalves up the left side of the field. Alex made a move that absolutely stuck the defensive player to the ground and got around the left corner where he was able to beat the outstretched keeper into the top shelf of the goal. The goal was enough on this day where it was a back and forth contest and both sides fought hard to the end. In the end the boys in red would go on for the 1-0 win and increase their record to 2-0 in the sub-regional league. Next week the boys open up the MAPLE season on the road at South Coast Scorpions.

Fall 2006 MAPLE Results
- LOST 4 - 1 versus Stars of MA (Sept. 10th): There was not much to cheer about on this day as it seemed whatever could go wrong did and the score told the tale as the good guys in black were defeated to open the season on the road. There was only a slight glimmer of hope in the second half. The team went into the half down 2-0 and early in the second went down 3-0 when a penalty kick found the back of the net. Moments later though the boys were able to break through with a score to cut the lead to 3-1 and it looked as if there was some life left especially, after a hard shot just went over the crossbar that could have cut it to a one goal lead. But it was not to be as the Stars team was able to put in the clincher a few minutes later catching the ever-pressing Western side pushed up in the offensive end trying to close the gap. The boys will be on the road again next week when they travel to Milot to take on Bruno United.
- WON 3 - 1 versus Bruno United (Sept. 17th): The boys in white were able to notch their first win of the season with a hard-fought win at Milot field this week. The team was able to overcome an early push by Bruno in the first 15 minutes due to some great defensive plays and some outstanding goalkeeping from Stephen "the Wall" Lopes. The boys were then able to settle in and just before the half David Bohl was taken down in the box and Rudi "Mr Automatic" Ottariano was able to put away the ensuing PK. Once again the Bruno side would come out with ferver. Although some great goalkeeping came from Lopes in the first half it did not even match up with the brilliant saves he came up with in the first 8 minutes of the second half. Bruno was able to get off a well-placed shot to the far post that looked as if it were going in, when the outstretched hand of Stephen deflected the ball out. The oncoming forward for Bruno was first to the ball inside the 6 and surely would put away the rebound. Someone forgot to send that message to "The Wall" as he quickly got to his feet and absolutely stuffed the rebound off the foot of the attacker to preserve the lead. At the 10 minute mark of the second half Alex Goncalves was able to strip a defender of the ball and scoot in and put away a low stinger past the keeper to give Western a 2-0 lead. At the 15 minute mark Bruno was able to get one back as a highly debated goal was scored on what looked like an obvious offside infraction. The final tally of the match would come on a picture-perfect feed from Eli Wilson-Berkowitz as he zipped a laser and hit Alex Goncalves in stride where he calmly put the ball away to the near post for his second goal of the match. It was as if Eli had a scope looking down the barrel at the target and the pass was a bullseye. Fantastic defensive effort today and a great showing from newcomer Eric Andreski who played a solid midfield as did Weston Aller. The boys all really stepped things up in the second half and were not to be denied. Next week the Western side will have its hands full as they will play host to the defending state champs, Greater Boston Bolts.
- LOST 2 - 0 versus Greater Boston (Sept. 24th): The good guys in white hosted the defending state champs this week in what was told to be a very lopsided game in the Bolts favor. That, as they say, is why they play the games. Both teams would go at it fiercely in a defensive struggle in the first half. The teams both fought hard and were able to get a couple of chances a piece but the game would remain scoreless at the half. Western came out charging hard and 3 minutes into the second half Jay Roberts was able to beat the keeper but was denied when the ball ricocheted off the crossbar back into the field of play. At the 11 minute mark of the half the Bolts would break the deadlock when a bad bounce went in their favor and the onrushing forward was able to capitalize and put the ball past the keeper for the 1-0 lead. Then, 19 minutes in they would find the net again when a Bolts player all alone inside the six was able to put in a rebound off a nice save by Lopes. The game would end in a loss for the Western side at 2-0. The team fought hard all game and were in it till the end and had some excellent scoring chances. If nothing else, the team proved they are still one of the best around and can contend with any team out there. Hats off to the whole team for a fine effort. There will be little time to catch their breath as they now have to travel to Devens to take on the Boston Blast, last years state finalist, who's record currently stands at 3-0.
- LOST 5 - 2 versus Boston Blast (Oct. 1st): In a tale of two halves this week the good guys travelled to Boston but were not able to knock off the Blast. Boston struck first but was answered by the Western side quickly when Delano Brown was able to send a beautiful ball to Weston Aller. Weston was able to burn the back of the net with a scorcher of a shot. The boys would go into the half at 1-1. A couple of early goals in the second half by the Blast gave them a 3-1 advantage, but Alex Goncalves was able to get one of the goals back for Western to cut it to 3-2. Pressing forward to try and equalize the back 4 was left exposed a bit and the Blast were able to capitalize putting two more in the net for the final 5-2 tally. Not a bad effort by the team in the rain. Now they just need to keep up the intensity for the full 70 minutes and to get back to the hard-hitting nature this team has become known for. The team's re-organization continues on track and the coaches are very optimistic for the rest of the season. Next week, the team will go to the Nashua Invitational in New Hampshire to take on some quality opponents. Good luck boys!!!!
- TIED 3 - 3 versus FC United (Oct. 15th): It was a tale of two halves this past weekend. The home team of FC United would open the game quickly and get a fast goal in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Western side regained a bit of composure and was able to play into the flow of the game when a hotly disputed PK was awarded to FC United mid-way through the half. They would convert and go into the half with a 2-0 lead. Whatever Coach Isa said to the boys at halftime should be bottled and sold as the vistiing Western United boys came out to start the half with a vengeance. In the first 25 minutes of the second half 2 goals by Delano Brown and one by Jay Roberts had the home fans stunned and wondering what had happened. The home team was able to tie up the game in the last 3 minutes of the game with a nice head ball from a good cross. A great show of composure in a tough place to play against a tough team gave the Western United boys an important point on the road, which are hard to come by in this division. A tough opponent in FC Puma will come to the Oxbow next week.
- WON 3 - 1 versus FC Puma (Oct. 22nd): On a perfect day for soccer, things did not start out so well for the home side when in the 2nd minute of the game they were called for a PK. The Puma striker was not able to put away the kick. Momentum was quickly with the home side and they took advantage when in the 5th minute Delano Brown was able to make a run at the goal. He fired a low lancer that the keeper was able to stop, but not hold, and Patrick Cronin was in perfect position to knock home the rebound for the score. At the 17 minute mark FC Puma was able to collect a loose ball inside the eighteen and put in a score of their own. At the 28 minute mark Eli "Moves" Wilson-Berkowitz made his way around the left side of the field and found an onrushing Alex "Speedy" Goncalves who rocketed a shot past the keeper to take a 2-1 lead into the half. The second half saw a hard-hitting defensive struggle. Both teams were unrelenting and were showing that neither would back down in this game. In the 32nd minute of the second half Weston Aller was able to drop a couple defenders in his tracks and make a beautiful pass to Patrick Cronin on the left side. Patrick calmly collected the pass and sent a shot searing into the near-post netting to secure the 3-1 win for the home team. A hard-working team effort today. The constant pressure of the forwards of Delano Brown, Patrick Cronin, and Alex Goncalves on the Puma defense was able to keep the opposing defense on their heels the whole game. The team will be at home next week versus North Shore.
- WON 2 - 0 versus North Shore (Oct. 29th): On a blustery day in Northampton the boys were able to overcome the conditions and the opponent to continue the streak of good fortune. In very well-played, business-like fashion the home side was able to dispose of the team from North Shore without much doubt from beginning to end. Western would open the scoring 4 minutes into the match when Jay Roberts found Delano Brown down the right side of the field. Delano was able to control the ball and rocket a shot into the back of the net for the first goal of the match. In the 11th minute a goal was disallowed when an offside call was made after the ball had gone into the net. Undaunted by this misfortune, the home team would add another goal when Jay Roberts went down the left side, this time to Alex "the Streak" Goncalves and Alex was able to find the space between the keeper and the near post to finish off the tally and take a 2-0 halftime lead. With great game contol Western was able to control the second half. They had several near-misses and were never seriously threatened on this day. The defense of Rudi Ottariano, Jesse Geary, Patrick Anthony, Brandon Pothier and Eric Andreski were able to keep a clean sheet to earn the first shutout during the league season. The boys travel to play the SF Vikings next weekend in an important game. The win this week vaulted the boys into 5th place.
- LOST 2 - 1 versus SF Vikings (Nov. 5th):

U13 Boys Qualify for State Cup Round-Robin
On a damp
overcast day the Western United boys were able to overcome the weather
conditions and the opponent to notch their spot in the round robin phase of
the state cup. The teams would take some time getting their feet under them,
literally, on the damp, slick field. It was in the 24th minute of the first
half when Jay Roberts was able to find a streaking Alex Goncalves on the
right side of the pitch. Alex was able to just beat the keeper to the ball,
slide to his right a bit with a nifty little move and put the ball into the
open net for the opening score of the game. The half would end in a tight
1-0 contest. Just minutes into the second half the SF Vikings tried to take
advantage of a rare defensive mistake on this day. The Vikings forward was
able to take a loose ball in the penalty area and get past the defenders. It
all looked very promising for the Vikings until Tyler Stanton came up with a
huge save taking the ball off the foot of the attacking player at point
blank range. In the 11th minute of the second half Mike Choquette was then
able to find Delano Brown with a well placed through ball that Delano was
able to put away to give Western a 2-0 lead. Then in the 23rd minute Nick
Calabrese was able to get the ball to Mike Choquette off a free kick where
Mike was able to calmly turn and fire a shot past the keeper for the final
tally of the game. The back four of Rudi Ottariano, Patrick Anthony, Jesse
Geary and my friend Nick Calabrese were able to anchor a great defensive
effort and Tyler Stanton was able to take away anything that came his way.
This win puts the team in its rightful place with the elite 8 in the round
robin phase of the state cup. The team will need to get their breath back
quickly as they will try to maintain their division lead as the second place
FC Puma team comes in to try and knock the Western side from atop the
division.
Spring 2006 MAPLE Results
- Week 1 (April 2nd): WON 2 - 0 versus Stars of MA. [The U13 boys started the spring MAPLE season in grand fashion with a convincing 2-0 shutout over the visiting Stars of Mass team. Going into a stiff wind in the first half the home side was able to maintain possesion for much of the first half action. The first tally of the game came 25 minutes into the first half when an outstanding pass from Jay Roberts found its way across the field to an oncoming Eli Wilson-Berkowitz, hitting him in stride, and Eli finding the net with a blast past the keeper to the near post. That is how the first half would end in a 1-0 lead for the good guys in red. The second half saw much of the same but with the wind now at their backs the guys in red were able to maintain a constant pressure on the Stars' defensive backs. The final tally of the game came 6 minutes into the second half when Eli Wilson-Berkowitz was able to collect a loose ball and get it to Delano Brown who was able to beat an onrushing keeper to the ball and maintain his balance well enough to sneak it by him while another defender was tackling him from behind. The defensive effort all over the field stymied the Stars of Mass all day long and only one real threat came in the 18th minute of the second half when a bouncing ball hit off the outside of the post harmlessly away from the goal and was cleared away. Chris Schultz and Patrick Anthony were nothing short of stellar the entire match but it was the overall effort of the entire team that put this one in the victory column for the good guys today. Next week the team will be on the road to take on the South Coast Scorpions.]
- Week 2 (April 9th): LOST 2 - 1 versus South Coast [The good guys in red came up a bit short this week in taking their first loss of the spring season. It would be a day of frustration for the boys as the finishing touch just wasn't meant to be on this day. South Coast opened up the scoring in the 19th minute of the first half on a breakaway that Tyler Stanton got a hand on but just couldn't quite keep out of the net. The first half ended with South Coast in the lead 1-0. Western came out strong in the second half and had countless opportunities to put a few goals in the net, but a couple of nice saves from the South Coast keeper and some bad luck kept the boys in red out of the net until the 32nd minute of the second half when Mark Richards was able to collect a loose ball in the area and make a beautiful turn and shot that found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. But alas, the tie was not to be as South Coast was able to put a beautiful header in off a corner kick in the final minute of the game to take a 2-1 victory! Mike Choquette was absolutely brilliant all game long with his play-making ability. Unfortunately for the Western team someone forgot to take the saran wrap off the front of the goal on this day. The team controlled play for most of the game just couldn't quite get the finishing touches together. The team will have the Easter weekend off for some much needed rest and then will be home to host the SF Vikings in a prelude to their State Cup match.]
- Week 3 (April 23rd): WON 4 - 2 versus SF Vikings [On a rainy Sunday the good guys in red were able to notch their second victory of the spring season. The scoring opened early. In the 4th minute Delano Brown was taken down in the box and on the ensuing PK Rudi Ottariano put in a perfect kick that the keeper had no chance of stopping to give Western the early 1-0 lead. But the Vikings would battle right back when they took advantage of some miscommunication in the box between the defense and keeper for the boys in red and netting the tying goal at the 17 minute mark. The score would stand at 1-1 at the half. The Western side came out in the second half smoking and were beginning to fire on all cylinders when Mark Richards collected a pass from the defense and would turn to find a streaking Delano Brown and hit him with the through ball. Delano was able to fake the keeper and get around him for the easy put in to take a 2-1 lead at the 8 minute mark of the second half. At the 21 minute mark the Vikings defense mishandled a ball that Jay Roberts was able to steal and put a rocket into the upper right corner of the net for the 3-1 lead. Soon after, Tommy Barron was able to find Alex Goncalves with a pass that Alex smartly chipped over an oncoming keeper to beat him and find the back of the net in the 26th minute for his first goal wearing the Western red. The SF Vikings were able to get a late tally when in the 33rd minute a cross found a man in the box and he was able to finish the final tally of the game. The Western side will have quite a challenge next week as they travel to play Greater Boston.]
- Week 4 (April 30th): TIED 2 - 2 versus Greater Boston [The boys in white this week battled to a 2-2
tie on the road. The boys got off to a bit of a rocky start when a deflected
shot found its way passed the goalkeeper in the 6th minute of the game to
give Greater Boston the early 1-0 advantage. Battling hard the rest of the
half the team was able to get on the board late in the first half when Alex
Goncalves took a great through ball from Mike Choquette and sent a rocket at the goal which the
keeper could not handle. Following the shot Alex was able to beat the keeper
to the ball and get it in the back of the net to knot the score up in the
34th minute and take the 1-1 tie into the half. Another fiercely battled
half was under way as both sides went at each other hoping to get the go
ahead score. In the 32nd minute of the second half Greater Boston was able
to get the go ahead score to take a 2-1 lead and what seemed like the sure
game winner. Someone forgot to tell the good guys in white. They were able
to battle right back and in the 34th minute of the half Nick Calabrese sent
in a shot that ricoched off a defender to the awaiting Delano Brown on the
back side. He calmly pushed the ball past the keeper for the final tally of
the game at 2-2. What an outstanding effort by both sides. The boys in white
never quit and kept their heads about them throughout in order to bring home
a hard earned point on the road. It won't get any easier as the team will
again be on the road to face FC United in hopes of avenging its only loss
from the fall season. GREAT EFFORT FROM THE WHOLE TEAM THIS WEEK!]
- Week 5 (May 7th): WON 1 - 0 versus FC United. [If you like hard hitting, defensive soccer
then today was the perfect match for you. In a game where the hits just kept
on coming the good guys in white were able to pull out a hard earned victory
in a hostile environment. The intensity level was high throughout the match.
Both sides traded hit after hit with Western being able to control much of
the offensive flow throughout the game but could not penetrate the stingy FC
United defensive backs. The best chance of a score came when Mike Choquette
was able to hit Alex Goncalves down the left side of the field. Alex was
able to get around the corner and sent a rocket that hit off the post
shaking the goal but would not go in. The half would end at 0-0. The second
half was much like the first. Eli Wilson-Berkowitz tried to get the good
guys on the board when he sent a blast from the left side that the keeper
was able to just get a hand on to keep it out of the net. Then finally it
came. In the 31st minute of the second half Mike Choquette was able to get
around the right side of the defense and send a nice rolling ball across the
box. The ball found its way past the forwards and the defenders to a well
positioned Chris Schultz on the left side of the box. Chris hit a laser beam
past a diving keeper that burned the back of the net. After the team mauled
him in celebration, they were able to compose themselves to finish off the
last four minutes of the game for a well earned victory. What a great all
around team effort in which the boys defended ferociously all over the
field. Mike Choquette, Nick Calabrese and Jimmy Hillmann absolutely
controlled the middle of the field throughout the match and the overall
effort of the whole team was able to keep FC United from mounting any
serious threats on this day. Next up, the team will play at home in a state
cup challenge match versus the SF Vikings for a spot in the round robin
phase of the State Cup.]
- Week 6: WON 1 - 0 versus FC Puma [On another dreary day just one day after qualifying for the State Cup Round-Robin the boys had to take to the field again to face a tough opponent and to try to maintain their lead in the division. It was a typical game versus FC Puma, U-G-L-Y!!! In a tough defensive struggle throughout there was never any kind of real flow to the game. The first half ended at 0-0 with not much adventure at all. Both teams seemed to be trying to get their footing on the field as well as in the match. The second half saw much of the same with the exception of some flashes of offense from the good guys in white. In the last 15 minutes of the game the Western United team seemed to reach down deep into themselves to start mustering up some offense to finish off the game. Mike Pope tried to get the boys in white on the board first but unfortunately was denied by the crossbar. In the 30th minute of the second half Mike Pope would fight his way through one tackle to get around the left corner and find Alex Goncalves waiting in the middle of the box, where he would collect the ball, fake the defender out of his shoes and strike the shot low and hard to find the back of the net for the game's only score. This play was set up by the tremendous effort by Mike Pope maintaining his balance to get the pass off. The defensive effort by the Western United back four was flawless and no real threats came from the FC Puma side. Good teams are able to prevail on days when they might not be at their best, and that is exactly what the Western side was able to do today. Next week the team will be on the road for their final regular season game against the Boston Blast.

Fall 2005 MAPLE Results
- TIED 2 - 2 versus Greater Boston (Sept. 11th). The good guys in red played FC Greater Boston (last year's U12 State Champions) to a 2-2 tie in a hard-fought match. Both sides had opportunities to score but could not convert early in play, resulting in a first half 0-0 tie. Greater Boston opened the scoring at the 40-minute mark with a cross from the right side that found an open attacker coming down the middle of the box who fired a quick shot and scored. Western answered the call four minutes later on a 30- yard direct kick from Mike Choquette that found the open space just below the crossbar. Western would take the lead at the 51-minute mark when Eli Wilson Berkowitz was involved in a scramble inside the box to the left of the opponent's goal. In scramble Eli passed the ball to Delano Brown who then sent a chip shot that went over the outstretched hands of the goalkeeper and bounced across the goal line into the far right side of the goal. With 8 minutes left in the match, Greater Boston converted from the right side of the pitch when the a direct kick went to the far left side of the Western goal and was headed in. Tyler Stanton played well in goal, making several difficult stops during the match.
- TIED 1 - 1 versus FC Puma (Sept. 18th). Western opened the scoring early at the two minute mark when Nick Calabrese stripped the ball from an FC Puma player and sent a long pass to Delano Brown, who was breaking down the middle of the pitch. Delano beat two defenders and sent a soft shot under the crossbar for the first goal of the match. Although Western would put pressure on the Puna defenders throughout the first half, the good guys in red could not find the back of the net again. FC Puma would tie the match at the 33-minute mark, forcing a 1 - 1 tie at the half. Western again put a lot of pressure on the Puma keeper with the best chances just missing the mark on two shots that went over the crossbar, one header that hit the crossbar and a charging Western attacker trying to head a cross that resulted in a major collision with the Puma keeper in front of the goal mouth. The match ended in a 1 - 1 tie, bringing the team's record thus far to 0 - 0 - 2. Next week the team plays South Coast at the Oxbow.
- WON 2 - 0 versus South Coast (Sept. 25th). The Western side notched it's first win of the fall 2005 season with a 2-0 hard fought win over South Coast. Western opened the scoring 16 minutes into the first half when Mike Choquette headed a ball to Weston Aller. Weston got a quick pass off to Delano Brown who beat the last defender, scoring one vs. one against the South Coast keeper. The score would carry to the end of the first half and a 1-0 lead for Western. In the second half Western was attacking down the right side of the pitch. Tom Barron sent a crossing pass across the pitch that was gathered up by Eli Wilson Berkowitz breaking down the left wing. Eli made a beautiful move beating his defender sending a pass to Mark Richards who sent a shot that found the upper right corner of the goal giving Western its insurance and final goal of the match. With its win, Western is still undefeated, and is now 1-0-2 on the year.
- WON 3 - 1 versus Noreaser (Oct. 2nd). A hot, bright, sunny day greeted the Western side after a long drive to Fairhaven to meet Nor'easter on their home turf. The home field advantage seemed to help the home team as no goals were scored through the bulk of the first half in spite of an ongoing, blistering attack by the good guys in red. With less than one minute left in the first half, Jimmy Bright-Dumm won a battle with a Nor'easter defender inside the box sending a soft pass to Pat Anthony who knocked the ball into the back of the net from the six, giving Western a 1-0 half-time lead. Western would turn the heat up in the second half. At the 45 minute mark, Tom Barron brought the ball down on the right flank sending a pass to Pat Anthony. Pat continued to switch the field of play sending a pass to Mark Richards who continued the movement to the left side with a pass to Eli Wilson-Berkowitz who then scored what proved to be the winning goal. At the 49 minute mark, the Western defense stopped a Nor'easter attack sending the ball up the middle to Mike Choquette. Mike sent a timed, long ball towards the right corner that was received Tom Barron. Tom ripped a shot towards the far left goal post that the Nor'easter keeper deflected with a full, extended leap. Eli Wilson-Berkowitz gathered up the deflection, chipped the ball over the keeper and the insurance goal was headed in by Pat Anthony. Nor'easter would score at the 60 minute mark as a result of a restart from about 30 yards out but would get no closer. Special recognition goes to Pat Anthony for scoring two goals coming off the bench in today's match. The win raised Western's undefeated record to 2-0-2, lifting the team to third place in Division 1. The boys will participate in a tournament in Nashua, NH over the Columbus Day weekend (six Massachusetts D1 teams will be playing in tournament), resuming MAPLE play in two weeks at home against the Boston Blast.
- TIED 3 - 3 versus Boston Blast (Oct. 16th) After 10 days of heavy rains and seeing the Nashua Tournament called due to rain, the Western side was finally able to set foot on a dry pitch, facing a pumped up Boston Blast side. The first half started with the Blast controlling the ball as the Western side seemed to be rusty from not being able to get outdoors combined with very tentative play. After the first 35 minutes, the match was a 0-0 draw. This proved to be a stark contrast to what would be seen in the second half as the last 35 minutes of the match would draw comparisons to a wild west shootout of the Earp's and Stanton's at the OK corral. Western opened up the scoring at the 40 minute mark when Mike Pope sent a pass to Eli Wilson Berkowitz who was attacking space at the left corner of the pitch. After beating a defender, Eli dropped a pass back to Mark Richards who shot the ball over the head of the opposing keeper for the first tally of the match. Boston answer the score with a tally of their own less than one minute later. Western would answer the "call of goal" next at the 47 minute mark when Nick Calabrese sent a ball down the middle of the pitch on a restart to Delano Brown. Delano beat a charging goalkeeper to the ball, sending a low off-balance shot into the back of the net. The Blast would score the next two goals at the 49 minute and 54 minute marks taking a 3-2 lead. Operating in never say die mode, Western would notch the final tally of the day as Jason Roberts sent a long lead pass to Delano Brown who nailed a hard shot into the back of the net for what proved to be the final goal of the day and a hard fought 3-3 tie. Western is now in third place in Division 1 with a 2-0-3 record on the season. Next week Western takes on second place FC United.
- LOST 2 - 1 versus FC United (Oct. 23rd) Western United took its first loss of the season playing under the lights on a dark, drizzling night at West Boylston High School. The match started as a back and forth affair with both sides being unable to capitalize on the scoring opportunities that they created. At the 30 minute mark of the first half, Western's defense cleared the ball up to Delano Brown. Delano attacked the box and while under pressure, sent a soft pass to Weston Aller who banged it under the crossbar for Western's first goal and a 1-0 half time lead. FC United would come back and score two unanswered goals in the second half at the 42 and 55 minute marks. Although Western put a tremendous amount of pressure on the FC United goal for the final 10 minutes of the game, the result was a 2-1 loss. Nick Calabrese made two goal saving plays as he cleared the ball off the goal line, one in each half. Western United now stand at 2-1-3 on the season and will next face their archrivals, the Western Massachusetts Junior Pioneers.
- WON 5 - 1 versus Pioneers (Oct. 30th) Western United took Western Massachusetts bragging rights, destroying their archrival cross town neighbors at the Pioneers home field, Lusitano Stadium. The Pioneers opened up the scoring with a goal at the 5 minute mark. After that, the only scoring that was done was by the boys in red. At the six minute mark, Mike Choquette picked the pocket of a Pioneer midfielder, dribbled in on goal and shot for the team's first goal. Mark Richards would duplicate the feat at the 24 minute mark for the team's second goal. At the 27 minute mark, Jimmy Bright-Dumm crossed the ball into the six, where Jason Roberts banged home the team's third goal of the match and a 3-1 halftime lead. In the second half, Delano Brown scored at the 43 minute mark beating the defense in a foot race and hitting the ball into the back of the net. At the 30 minute mark, Tom Barron sent a long cross to Patrick Anthony who was in the middle of the box. Pat dropped the ball back to Delano Brown who was prowling the box at the 18, sending a hard shot to the upper left 90. The outstanding defensive play of Nick Calabrese, Rudi Ottariano, Chris Shultz, Jesse Geary and goalkeeper Tyler Stanton stymied and frustrated the Pioneer offense throughout the match. Western improves it's record to 3-1-3 and can clinch a D1 berth for Spring 2006 play by winning one of its last two games. Next week's opponents, the Stars of Massachusetts at Devens.

The defense misplayed the ball which was gathered up by Delano Brown who took the ball in 1v1 against the keeper and scored.
