As Under-11 Boys (2004-2005)

U11 Boys Win 2005 Holliston Memorial Day Tournament

The U11 Boys Red team went undefeated in winning the Holliston Memorial Day Tournament. Despite playing in the U12 division the boys were cranking on all gears in clinching the title. In the first game against Southern Vermont six different players scored in a lobsided 7 to 2 victory. Pokey Foley, Eddie Mercer, Tom Granot (2), John Bzdel, Pat O'Shea and Miles Cecchetelli had finishes while assists went out to Ryan Dickinson, Eddie Mercer (3), Kyle Kupka (2), Pokey Foley (2) and Tom Granot. Men of the match were goalies Nick Martinelli and Kory Kibler who played solid against the U12 team. After four hours of lunch and whiffle ball, the Western boys came out flying against next week's Andre Cup opponent Mass Youth Select. The select team is a higher seed in next week's Cup play, but offered little resistance to the black and red in a 6-0 thrashing. Scoring for WU was man of the match Greg Gagnon (2), Tom Granot (2), Ryan Casey (header) and Ryan Dickinson. Assists were recorded by Pokey Foley (2), Tom Granot, Eddie Mercer, Kory Kibler and Miles Ceccetelli. Miles also earned man of the match by man marking the Selects dangerous attacking CMF. Miles limited this fine player to only one shot and few playmaking opportunities. Connor O'Brien and Kory Kibler split the shut out. On the second day of the tournament the Western team continued their hot play with a 6-0 win over Barrington Classic of Rhode Island. Scoring for Western was Tom Granot, Eddie Mercer, Pokey Foley, Connor O'Brien, Pat O'Shea and Kyle Kupka. Kyle also led the team with three assists; Tom, Pat and Torsten Johnson with the others. Eddie and Connor earned man of the match with spectacular finishes off of Kyle's corners. Eddie's a header from the 12 and Connor's a volley from far post. The second game of the day was thunderstormed out and forfeited by the North Smithfield YSA U12 team. The opponent was suffering from a number of injuries, have their state cup the following weekend and were already eliminated from medal play. On Championship Monday WU had a rematch with Mass Youth Select from Maple Blue Division. Despite beating them earlier 6-0 the Select team came out strong with a full squad of players and a different system of play which featured two sweepers and a lone forward. The system frustrated the passing game of Western with the extra defender but Pokey Foley found a lane and a perfectly delivered ball by Andrew Bemben led to a 1-0 lead in the semi final game. MYS evened it a short time later when the target player found an unmarked midfielder who hit a perfect strike past WU goalie Kory Kibler. Much of the match the score stayed locked as Western pressed forward with more and more numbers. Finally, with 9 minutes left right back and man of the match Nick Martinelli stepped up to deny a pass to his mark, beat 2 other defenders on his way to the 18 and dished off to a wide open Ryan Dickinson. Ryan skillfully beat the keeper for the game winner. MYS mustered one last charge with 4 minutes left when they earned a direct kick at the top of the 18 but a well struck ball which found a way through the Western wall was saved by man of the match, Kory and ended the day for MYSA. In the finals the Western team was up against the U12 home team from Holliston. This team had easily won it's five games including a 5-1 win over Juventus in the semi's. There was cause for concern early as Hollison earned and converted a penalty kick in the first 5 minutes to take a 1-0 lead. The Western guys who have previously struggled in the finals of tournaments showed their resolve as the Holliston team relaxed after their quick strike. Just as suddenly, a lofted chip played into the box to Co-MVP striker Tom Granot was volleyed out of the air past the surprised keeper. With the game now tied Western played marvelously with confidence and courage. There was no hesitant or panicked play as balls were won and skills and great decision making took over. Near the end of the first half a ball sent deep to the corner to Granot was held until Connor O'Brien supported. Tom's perfect touch on the back pass enabled Connor to one touch serve to far post. Jon Bzdel (man of the match) went up and over his defender and the goalie to win the header and redirect back across the goal to a waiting Jacob Rothstein (man of the match). Jacob volleyed the ball into the net for the game winner. A second half goal from Tom Granot on a great give and go with Greg Gagnon added insurance. Co-MVP Kyle Cupka finished a PK earned by Andrew Benbem to conclude the 4-1 victory and the championship weekend. Congratulations to the U11 boys who participate in the Andre Cup to determine the State Championship this upcoming week.
