The U12 Boys had a mixed season - starting off strong with two wins in three games against top-five opponents, but then failing to capitalize on the season's goal of a top four finish and winding up in 7th place in the blue division.
The tournament season has been more fruitful, with a second-place finish in their bracket in the Oakwood Premier tournament followed by a semifinal goal kick tiebreaker against top four Maple League finisher NE Eagles. Western lost the tiebreaker, but came home satisfied with a 2-1-1 record after a four game losing streak. Mass teams FC Puma, NE Eagles, and Western United finished with unblemished records against Connecticut teams including the strong host team (who Western unfortunately did not have the opportunity to play).
In the first weekend of State Cup play, with a division one slot on the line for next fall, Western started with a loss but then trounced two teams that have historically given them trouble, Sachems (2-0) and FC United (5-2). The team continued its winning ways against another tough competitor, the Fuller Hamlets, with a 1-0 shutout win. The two tournament weekends produced the best offensive burst from the Western U12s in memory and first-time goals by five players, hopefully signaling that new Coach Byron Brown's work has begun to pay off. Western dominated play against the Sachems, though only scoring after the 50th minute after wearing the Sachems down with speed and a solid passing game. Aidan Greenwood connected for two assists on inspired runs down the sideline with willing and organized help in the center to pick up two goals in two minutes - enough to assure Western of a playoff berth in a three-way tie on points. The team now advances to the state cup quarterfinals and a slot in division one next fall.
